| Few are aware that the Sunderer’s “tongue” consists of over 6000 words, each one formed by the hitting and scratching of a small chitin-covered organ against the creature’s mandibles. Though at first I was barely to discriminate a single word, my studies have allowed me to become – though I say it myself – rather proficient in Sunderese. After an intense period of analysis and experimentation, I was able to communicate with them by hitting a bone against the remains of a crab’s jaw. Imagine my surprise to find that they have over 100 different words for sand, but only one word for humans, wood, and brittle. |
